Olympic Heights Goalkeeping Duo Set to Anchor Defense One More Season

As Olympic Heights High School’s girls soccer team prepares for another competitive campaign, there's one area of the field where the Lions can breathe a little easier: between the posts.

Seniors Ava Finnerty and Evelyn Soroka-Quiroz are back for their final season, giving the Lions one more year of consistency and leadership in goal—a luxury that few programs in the area can claim.

Experienced, Tested, and Trusted

Over the past decade, Olympic Heights has been known for its rock-solid goalkeeping tradition. From Maddy Miller’s 514 saves in 85 games to Olivia Calnek and Victoria Barreto, the Lions have always found a way to protect the net with confidence.  Miller played for Polk State before transfering to Southeastern College earning All Region, while Calnek won the Land Rover Player of the Year during her senior year earning a $10,000 scholarship.  During the season hat Calnek missed the first 11 games, freshmen Amelia Catto and Talia Badalamente combined for a 7-2-2 record and .72 GAA.

Now, with Finnerty and Soroka-Quiroz returning for their senior year, the program continues that legacy.

  • Ava Finnerty has appeared in 52 varsity matches, racking up 136 saves with a solid .94 goals-against average (GAA) across three seasons. Her steady hands and vocal leadership have made her a cornerstone of the Lions' defense.

  • Evelyn Soroka-Quiroz has emerged as a reliable backup and potential starter, playing in 25 games and posting a .58 GAA. Her growth and work ethic provide essential depth and competition in training.

Together, they give Olympic Heights a one-two punch in goal that few teams in the district can match.

Setting the Stage for a Strong Final Season

This final campaign offers more than just another chance at postseason success—it’s an opportunity for both Finnerty and Soroka-Quiroz to cement their place in the program’s storied keeper lineage.

With 13 years of standout goalie play behind them, the Lions are hoping this duo can help deliver one more memorable season before the torch is passed.

And while the future of the position will be a hot topic next year, for now, Coach Jim Cappello is focused on what lies ahead in 2025.

“Having Ava and Evelyn back gives us a huge advantage," said Cappello. "Their experience, confidence, and chemistry with the back line are irreplaceable. They know the system, they trust each other, and they care deeply about this program.”

One More Run

As players do summer workouts and begin and preparing for the season, Olympic Heights will lean on its veteran keepers to guide the team through its toughest tests. With Finnerty and Soroka-Quiroz leading from the back, the Lions’ defense looks as strong as ever.

The countdown is on—and with these two in net, Olympic Heights is ready.
